Happy New Year!!

Well wow, hasn't the time flown!

It has been a few months( 6 actually) since I last blogged which I know is waaaay too long but there have been big changes in our household that have made it really difficult to get anything other than the essentials done. No, no, no, not that, we haven't had a baby!
I've gone from a full time work at home mum to a full time working at a 9-5 job mum.
Whilst I absolutely loved the flexibility of being a WAHM and the opportunities it offered, I was starting to feel like I had lost a bit of me and with little monster starting year 1 in September I felt it was a now or never decision.
I had originally applied for a job in a school not too far from home but after being offered it the reality of not being able to take time off to see the kids performances or taking days here and there not to mention the 8am start(childcare would have been a nightmare) I had to turn the job down....but literally a week later the same school called me and offered me a job in the on-site children's centre - Perfect!
The job is extremely flexible, a 20 minute bus ride from home and what's more the small team of people that I work with are absolutely amazing.
I won't lie, there have been bumps along the way and the biggest heartache was putting little monster into breakfast and after school club, meaning I can't drop him off and pick him up from school everyday but generally this job has brought tons of positives into the household.
We find ourselves appreciating each other more and wanting to spend more quality time with each other, our scheduling has got rather good and I've found that little bit of me again!

I've been here since the end of August now and am loving every minute of it. Finally we have established a routine that works for us and family life is settling back down...for now.

The Story of this WAHM

Back in 2006 I made the big decision to give up a well paid job to attempt to carve out a freelance career for myself, enabling me to work from home and look after my two children. I, like a lot of people had the misconception that working from home would mean lazy days spent in my pj's, mornings at playgroups with my then 2 year old, meet ups with other mummies and their children...WRONG!!

Working from home is actually bloody hard work and I salute any parent who has managed to do this with success. The cold reality is that you have to be extremely disciplined. I found it very hard to sit down to get any work done when there were breakfast dishes to wash up, laundry to get done, a house to try and clean and general distractions.

When my daughter was born in 2002, I chose to go back to work when she was just 4 months old which meant I missed her first steps, first words and other major milestones. It was heart breaking to pick her up only to be told she had crawled, taken her first steps or done something equally memorable.
It was that horrible feeling of missing all of those things that helped me decide to take a full year of maternity leave when my son was born in 2004. It was the simple things like picnics on summer afternoons, swimming sessions, walks in the wood and baking with him that made me realise just how much I had missed with my first child and I thoroughly enjoyed being at home with him.
When the time came for me to return to work I knew it would be hard and I remember tearing up when I left them with the childminder and walked through the door.

I lasted just 5 months, I realised I couldn't do this any more. As much as I loved the money and the social aspect of my career, being away from the children for so many hours in a day was killing me.
I made the decision there and then that I would begin working from home.

To begin with I enjoyed the freedom of it all. My daughter by then was at the local school nursery fulltime and I would take my son to the park, toddler groups and all the things we had done whilst I was on maternity leave, the problem was, I wasn't on maternity leave and I had to find the time to work and try to do the housework too. Suddenly it wasn't like they make it look on film or in magazines, it was hard work. There were days when it would get to to 4pm before I had even managed to get any work done.

It did get easier when my son started nursery in January of '08 because the three hours he was at nursery I would dedicate solely to working and it seemed to work. It had taken a while but I finally found a balance and one that worked really well for the entire family.

No sooner had I got going with this working from home malarkey I found out I was expecting. That's when things took a turn for the worse, I suffered from severe morning sickness, pelvic girdle pain and towards the end my pregnancy midwife discovered that I had pre eclampsia which resulted in my son being born prematurely.
Again I took a year out to raise our latest addition and enjoyed every moment of it but I noticed that I was changing. I no longer was so career driven and my attitude and outlook on life was changing.
I wanted to stay home and bake, take on more DIY projects, make cushions and the like but bills still needed paying.
I continued to work from home after my youngest son turned 1 and found a happy medium between being a mum and working but it's not all sunshine and rainbows. It takes a lot of effort and is hard work.

Now my son is nearly 5 and has just started reception and whilst it is so much easier to get my work done during the days I feel like something is missing. My children and my family are my world, however, I feel I've lost myself a little along the way and what makes me well, me! Part of my 'journey of self discovery' has seen me enrol on a soft furnishings course which is just one day a week but its great being able to discover another side of myself and I am looking into a woodworking course.

I guess now is the time for me to decide whether to continue life as a work at home mum or go back out to work, a decision that I'm finding very difficult owing to the fact that I no longer want to work in the field I am trained in.
I've spoken to quite a few stay at home and work at home parents over the years and it seems I'm not alone. Many seem to lose themselves to some extent, attracting a label;stay at home mum/dad, husband, wife, parent and have to take time out to find themselves again.

I'm hoping that now the children are getting older and are slightly less dependent on me, I can find what makes me tick again.

Are you a stay at home or work at home parent? What are you thoughts on it?

Coughs Colds and Sneezes!

As much as I love the routine and structure that September brings to our lives I hate the coughs, colds, sneezes and bugs it brings and having 3 children all in school it has become almost a tradition that one will bring home some form of a bug and kindly share it with the rest of the family.

I'm always on the lookout for something that will help prevent any or all of the above so when I heard about a new drug free and non-drowsy product I was eager to give it a go.
Nasal Guard Cold & Flu Block is a water-based, drug free gel that is designed to reduce the likelihood of getting ill from cold and flu viruses by creating an invisible barrier around the nose. One of the biggest reasons I was keen to give it a go was that as it is drug free it means it can be used whilst taking other medicines and is suitable for children, the elderly and can be used during pregnancy.

The Cold & Flu Block comes in a handy handbag/pocket sized tube yet amazingly contains up to 150 applications and as you do not apply it directly to the nose area it means one tube is all a parent needs to 'dose up' the kids on the go!

In our house I can pretty much guarantee that someone will have a cold by the start of the second week in September so I was keen to start using this ASAP on everyone.

You simply squeeze 1-2 drops of the gel onto your forefinger and rub between your forefinger and your thumb. The white, non-greasy gel becomes clear as soon as it is rubbed and can then be applied directly around the nostrils and upper lip. The gel has no smell and I've worn it both when wearing and not wearing make up. The kids surprisingly enough had not complained once and what's more, it seems to be working. No coughs, colds or sneezes!!!

Nasal Guard Cold & Flu Block can be purchased exclusively at most Boots stores nationwide and is available online at www.boots.com

Weekly Meal Planner

With back to school in full swing this week it means that along with it are all of the extra curricular activities after school. In our house, that means swimming lessons, bmx sessions, music lessons, martial arts, scouts and football club!

With all of these clubs happening, it means there are quite a few days where I need to cook early on in the day so that as soon as the kids come in from school, they're fed, changed and out the door!
With the exception of Tuesday, which is my son's 9th birthday so we will more than likely go out for a meal.

With that in mind, here's this weeks weekly meal planner.

Weekly Meal Planner

Monday
Beef stew and dumplings with homemade bread.

Tuesday
Eating out

Wednesday
Shepherds pie with vegetables

Thursday
Corned beef and rice

Friday
Toad in the whole with mash and beans

Saturday
Turkey curry with noodles

Sunday
Roast chicken dinner with all of the trimmings!

Have a great week!

It's that time of year again!

Having three children often brings chaos and madness to any 'normal' week but once July sets in, it really does get crazy in our house. More so this year because my first born is off to high school in September and my little man will officially join the school and start reception.
So on top of the usual summer fair, sports days, end of term discos, award ceremonies, summer holiday prep and sourcing and making thank you teacher gifts this year I've also had to contend with secondary taster days, reception stay and play days, form filling and transition meetings.

Keeping me sane through all of this has been the hum of the sewing machine and the whizzing of the whisk. I am the proud owner if a new handmade peg bag, my son now has an activity holder for the car, I have made loads of bottles of different flavour infused oils and I've been taking great pleasure in completing some wedding DIY projects.

I will get around to uploading the tutorials  for these projects just as soon as normality resumes.....although, in our house I'm not quite sure we know what normality is!!!
